Healthy Choice Complete Meals: Shrimp Diavolo

The first impression I had when I took the film off after heating my Healthy Choice Shrimp Diavolo was this: "Eew, cherry-berry crisp in my shrimp," but you need some backstory before you'll know what I'm talking about.  So let's skip to my second impression and take it from there:  I was amazed at the amount of shrimp that I got in this. I counted twelve in the dish. The shrimp were tender and sweet and were nestled on a bed of pasta and covered in a spicy marinara sauce that lives up to its name: a generous amount of crushed red pepper mingles within the sauce, giving it a pleasant, flavorful peppery burn. Delicious. The best thing? There wasn't an overabundance of sauce. There was a 'just right' amount.

The veggie section - industry standard carrots and broccoli - were cooked very well. The carrots were actually really sweet, instead of kind of woody and 'carroty' in this one. I was shocked.

What was left of the "crisp" after it
erupted all over my microwave.
And then we had dessert. The crisp...except in reality, that crisp isn't so crisp. It's more like a 'soggy' actually. Made with blueberries and cherries, this cherry-berry thing wasn't really bad, but I hesitate to call it "good." The oats at the top get soggy and kind of fall into suspended animation in the middle of a sticky sauce pod that has little dots of berries in it here and there. And because its cooking time is actually less than the rest of the meal, it turned into this little molten goopot spewing...stuff...all over the microwave. And, to be frank, it's always these little fruit-flavored goopods that deter me from spending the extra bucks for a "complete meal" instead of just a one-dish thing. But anyway, the "crisp" was tart, in an unripened cherry sort of way, and had little blueberry flavor at all. And the gummy oats didn't help the texture much, either. I think that if I get this again, I'll just skip dessert and have a scoop of shebert from my own freezer, instead. Other than that, though, this meal's a winner. Mostly.

There's a few problems with this meal other than the cherry-berry crisp, so don't go away talking about my shining review yet.

Problem one is the cooking time. Remember the molten cherry-berry goo I was telling you about? The stuff that's supposed to be crisp? Well, I had a hard time cooking the rest of the entree because that goo had started to boil over from the tray and get all over everything. The microwave, the plastic film, my shrimp...you get the idea. So, I did what anyone else would do: take the meal out. Bad move, though. My shrimp entree is still frozen on the inside, even though I stirred it up like the directions told me to. So I pulled the now-sticky, disgusting film off, chucked it, and threw it in the microwave uncovered for another thirty seconds, watching it like a hawk the entire time. When the dessert - that "crisp" - started to boil over again, I finally said "To hell with it," took the meal out, and ate the now-slightly-crunchy shrimp first.

Problem two was the packaging. I'm not talking about the box it came in; that was fine. I'm talking about whatever machine was on the assembly line, spitting out food into trays. It got some cherry-berry goo-mixture crisp in my shrimp meal, and some things are just not made to go together. Like cherry-berry crisp and spicy shrimp. I ended up picking out a rogue cherry and scooping out a clump of goo with it. And then, I'd get a sugary-sweet tang in my spicy marinara. Eew.

Problem two may be atypical case though. Maybe the Quality Assurance department was out getting some coffee, or something, and this one happened to slip through. Overall, this is a pretty tasty meal, and the super generous amount of shrimp you get in here is well-worth another purchase as far as I'm concerned. I just hope that I don't get any of that cherry stuff in my shrimp next time.

Healthy Frozen Meals: Healthy Choice Pineapple Chicken

Since picking up the task of reviewing Healthy Frozen Meals, I've learned a few things. There are some meals that are better than others, there are some brands that are better than others, and there are some things that just don't lend themselves well to being frozen and put into a "healthy" form. (Dave's look at frozen lasagna proves that.) Over time, 've come to expect a lot from the Healthy Choice meals that I try. The brand is usually pretty good.

And then there's Healthy Choice Pineapple Chicken.

This was one of my least favorite Healthy Choice meals to date, and it's very much due to the chicken and the sauce. As usual, the rice and veggies are done to perfection: slightly crisp red bell peppers that overflow with flavor, carrots that are done so that they don't turn to mush, and rice that's not tough or mushy, but just right. The pineapple is fairly standard processed pineapple chunks, so I don't really have an opinion there.

But the chicken is just like those chicken tenders that you get at the Chinese fast food place up the street - you know, the ones where it's mostly batter and just the slightest hint of chicken within? Think of those with none of the grease, but all of the cardboardy flavor of the Chinese fast food kind, and that's what you get in this Healthy Choice meal.

And the sauce is the worst part yet. The package said that it was in a "sweet" sauce, and boy, that box wasn't kidding. Sweet notes - honey, pineapple juice, sugar - overpower everything in this meal. The ingredients say that there's supposed to be ginger in here, but I can't taste it over the syrupy sweetness of the sauce. In fact, I couldn't taste the veggies over the sauce, either. This was some seriously sickeningly sweet stuff.

In any extensive product line, there are bound to be items that fail to appeal.  This is not a meal that I'd ever contemplate buying again. It was a real shocker for me: until now, I'd only ever had one Healthy Choice meal that I didn't like (that review will be up within the week.) But this was just too overpoweringly sweet for my tastes. Perhaps if the sauce is toned down quite a few notches, I'll consider getting it again, but not before that.  If you've got a strong sweet tooth, though, you might give it a try.

Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers: Sesame Chicken

Costco had a great deal on Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers last time I was there. They were a four pack for something like seven bucks, and there was a coupon for three dollars off one of these four packs. Awesome deal. So the four packs had one flavor I've reviewed before (twice, even) - Orange Zest Chicken. The other three flavors are Margarita Chicken, Chicken Marinara, and today's entry, Sesame Chicken.

So the prep for these is, like all Cafe Steamers, chuck it into the microwave for four or five minutes, come back, stir, and eat. So after my four minutes are up, I pour everything into the sauce on the bottom of the bowl and stir it up and...

And...oh, are those mushrooms? Gross. Well, first observation is that there are mushrooms in the sauce. (I've always hated mushrooms; they have one of the most disgusting textures to me. But I love the flavor they add to food.) So I'll be picking around the mushrooms.

But everything tastes pretty good: the peas are what I've come to expect from Healthy Choice - cooked so that they're still crunchy but not soft and falling apart, the carrots are slightly crunchy and enjoyable, and the rice is perfectly done and - get this - actually sticky. Yes, Healthy Choice has done a miracle in the frozen food world: they have bestowed upon me sticky white rice to go with my Asian-inspired meal. Aces! The chicken is done perfectly as well, but it tastes kind of like it's been in a lemon juice base. It's got a tang if you taste it carefully, but if you're cutting it up and eating it with everything else you probably won't notice it.

Oh, remember what I said earlier about picking around the mushrooms? No such luck. The mushrooms are pretty well chopped, so it's hard to navigate around them. So other than the kind of rubbery, plasticy texture of the mushrooms, this meal rocks. So what about the sauce? It's thick - like, really thick, almost to a syurp stage - and it's got little sesame seeds in it, but they don't really lend that sesame flavor to everything. You can smell it when it cooks, sure, but other than that, there's so much more going on in this meal that you can't really taste the sesame note alone. And the sauce is very heavy on the sweet, and kind of lax on the spicy. And it tastes like mushrooms, but that shouldn't be a shocker - there's mushrooms throughout the entire thing.

So this meal is pretty good, overall. The veggies done well, and the rice was nothing short of amazing. (sticky rice that's been frozen?! Woah, cool!) The sauce was the letdown here, and it wasn't sue to flavor - it was definitely due to thickness. So, I'm going to minimize my cooking time next time I make it to see if that helps loosen the sauce up a bit.

Healthy Frozen Meals: Healthy Choice Spicy Caribbean Chicken

I love jerk chicken. I usually make it at home with some chicken breast that I fry up with onions all coated in jerk seasoning and serve with rice. Real jerk chicken? Probably not. Delicious with a spicy Caribbean kick? Most definitely. More than I like the spice of Caribbean seasonings, though, I loive the flavor they give things. Spicy and savory with a kick of sweet, it's always been like a carnival for my mouth. So I had picked up this Healthy Coice meal with the expectation of the same jerk flavor that I already knew I liked.

I can't say that I'm disappointed with this meal. It's strongly flavored - one could almost say that it's overseasoned - with allspice, black and red pepper, and cardamom as the leading notes. Unfortunately for me, it was more of a 'mild' than a 'spicy,' but it was still extremely enjoyable. It's mostly a rice and black bean concoction, with corn and the chicken added in on top, as well as chunks of pineapple to give it a sweet, fruity kick that works well with the other sweet-tasting spices. The rice was kind of strange - a bit spongy - but wasn't over or undercooked, and the chicken was tender, juicy, and held the brunt of the spices, like it had been rubbed before cooking. Delicious.

I'd get this meal again if it was on sale, definitely. With a good mix of pretty authentic spices, Healthy Choice does jerk seasoning some justice...in a healthy way.

Healthy Frozen Meals: Smart Ones Dragon Shrimp Lo Mein

Lynnafred here. Going back to school has made me miss a few things. One of those things is the ability to eat on a somewhat regualr schedule. Nowadays, I get up in the morning, chug a Mountain Dew, and that's about the extent to my food intake until I come home at about 2:00. I refuse to eat cafeteria food that has God-Knows-What in it, and the cafe's sandwiches run at something like $5 a pop, making them a bit pricier than I'd like for some turkey and cheese slapped between some bread. So when I get home, I pop some kind of frozen dinner in the microwave and it does a good job of holding me over until 5:30 or 6:00 when we eat dinner. And, I've got to admit, it's better than gorging myself on potato chips.

Foraging for a tasty frozen meal this afternoon, I found this Smart Ones Dragon Shrimp Lo Mein tucked in the freezer, so I figured I'd give it a try. It's supposed to be "tender shrimp in a mild soy-ginger sauce paired with Asian noodles tossed with sugar snap peas and carrots." And, it is mostly that. Mostly.

I'm once again delighted by how tender the shrimp were. Flavorful, sweet little shrimp were dotted throughout the meal, and were nestled in a little bed of noodles that looked, tasted, and had a mouthfeel more similar to spaghetti than to any "Asian noodle" I've ever eaten. A small handful of peas and shredded carrot were sprinkled in there, and apart coming out a tad soft (in spite of my reducing the cooking time by about two minutes) weren't too bad. What threw me, though, was the sheer amount of diced water chestnuts in here. They completely dominated the tiny amount of peas and carrot.

The sauce wasn't really much to rave about, either. While it had a spicy ginger kick and a sweet soy sauce note, I thought it odd that it tasted very much like gingery, garlicy chicken stock. And a look at the ingredients told me why. Chicken flavor is in the ingredient list, as well as chicken fat (twice, even!) and hydrolyzed chicken. Oh. So that's why it tasted like there was chicken broth in my shrimp meal. Because there was.

This probably isn't going to be something I ever get again. Not until they change the label to reflect what's really in there: "tender shrimp in a garlicy-gingery chicken broth paired with some spaghetti with diced water chestnuts."

Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers: Lemon Garlic Chicken & Shrimp

Friday, I wrote about how a ConAgra rep sent us a couple of the new Healthy Choice meals to review.  Today I'm writing about Healthy Choice Mediterranean Inspired Cafe Steamers Lemon Garlic Chicken and Shrimp.

This is another of the new flavors Heathy Choice is introducing, and after really enjoying the Roasted Red Pepper Marinara last week, I was looking forward to giving this one a try.  I have to hand it to Healthy Choice's kitchens: they have certainly come up with some good stuff.

Cafe Steamers Lemon Garlic Chicken and Shrimp includes shrimp, chicken tenderloin pieces, spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, and onions in a slightly thin lemon-garlic sauce.  The chicken was a bit dry but otherwise good - tender and with good flavor.  But I was really surprised by how great the shrimp was - plump, flavorful, perfectly-cooked shrimp are rare in frozen foods so finding these perfect little prawny gems was a happy surprise.

In fact, with the exception of a couple of pieces of broccoli that were a bit on the soft side, everything in the meal came out perfectly cooked and done to a "T."  The pasta came out pretty nicely cooked.  Neither tough nor chewy, firm but still tender, and the veggies were enjoyable as well, with gently cooked onion, excellent fresh-tasting spinach, and tomatoes that tasted like they had come out of a summer garden.  Overall, the veggies were superb.

Accenting it all was the sauce.  Nice and light yet full of flavor. The tangy bite of the lemon was a nice compliment to the earthy savor of the garlic, and I was glad to note that Healthy Choice used a light hand with the salt, just enough to bring out the full flavors.

Another great addition to the Cafe Steamers lineup from Healthy Choice.  This is definitely another variety that I'd happily buy again.

Healthy Choice All Natural Entrees: Roasted Red Pepper Marinara

Not too long ago, a rep from ConAgra's Healthy Choice sent Dave an email asking us if we'd want to sample a couple of the new Healthy Choice flavors that have just been introduced.  Dave agreed, and a few days later two of the new meals arrived on our doorstep: the Roasted Red Pepper Marinara I'm reviewing today, and Lemon Garlic Chicken and Shrimp, which I'll be reviewing on Monday.

Healthy Choice Roasted Red Pepper Marinara is a pasta dish with a really terrific sauce.  The pasta is made of nine different whole grains (oats, barley, wheat, rye, amaranth, quinoa, millet, sorghum and teff) and was cavatelli rather than the more common and generic rotini or ziti.  It had a really decent flavor, but I found the texture was a little odd - chewy and slightly gummy compared to the semolina flour pasta I'm used to.  Other than that, it was very good.  But it's definitely the suace that made the meal. A rich, robust tomato marinara redolent with roasted pepper flavor bathed the pasta.  And topping it all was a generous sprinkling of cheese that melted nicely as the pasta cooked in the microwave.

The deliciousness of the roasted red pepper marinara and the outstanding flavor of the pasta were all I needed to overlook the unfamiliar texture of the pasta  I wouldn't hesitate to buy this entree again.

Healthy Frozen Meals: Healthy Choice Sweet & Spicy Orange Zest Chicken Revisited

A while back, Dave and I sampled one of Healthy Choice's Cafe Steamers and were horrified, shocked, and slightly amused to find that  the "Orange Zest Chicken" meal we had bought tasted like a trip to the dentist's office: minty, sweet, and not much else. You can read the original review here. We chalked it up to something gone awry on the packing line and I said that if I had the opportunity, I'd taste it again.

After enjoying a freshly-purchased Sweet and Spicy Orange Zest Chicken, I can safely say that this thing is delicious. The chicken is tender and juicy, the veggies done to perfection, and the sauce has a sweet undertone of oranges and a spicy kick of hot red peppers. Whatever was wrong with the first one I tasted was not present in this one. I'm extremely happy to say that this may be one of my favorite Cafe Steamers I've had so far.

Healthy Frozen Meals: Smart Ones Thai Style Chicken and Rice Noodles

After some careful deliberation and avoiding frozen foods for a few weeks, I decided that I'm going to write these up as I'm eating them. It'll make their review much more honest and make me procrastinate less on actually writing the thing up.

And today, I'm looking at Smart Ones Thai Style Chicken and Rice Noodles. The fine print under the flavor adds: In a zesty peanut sauce.

Before I jump into this review, I want to say right now that I don't like "sour" notes in my food. The flavor of vinegar to me is a complete turn-off. That's why I don't like pickles, or sauerkraut, or hot-and-sour soup, or most sweet-and-sour Asian dishes. So keep this in mind as you read my review, okay?

This meal smelled of peanut butter and vinegar, which was an immediate warning that I probably wouldn't like it. And the monotone, brown sludge that came out of the microwave wasn't very appealing. It looked kind of slimy.

The carrots are cut up into little stick-like shapes; there's not an overabundance of them but there's definitely a good handful, and the rice noodles are all clumped together. That's one of the reasons I'm not a huge fan of reheated rice noodles. Sure, they're delicious, but the damn things stick together like no one's business. I stir the contents up according to package instructions and take a small bite.

The "zesty peanut sauce" is kind of strange. Peanutty, kind of sweet, and with an odd kind of tomato flavor, like tomato soup. It has a very mild cayenne-pepper spiciness. And a definite vinegary sourness.

Remember what I said about me not liking sour. For me, the combination of the vinegar and the tomato made this meal taste like those vomit-flavored jelly beans that come in Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Bean. Objectively, this flavor combination probably works for a lot of people, but I just hate hate hate vinegar flavoring. Getting through this one bite of noodle is hard enough, and without Dave here to egg me on, I can't stomach much more of this. I can't even tell you what the carrots or the chicken is like, because I can't get past the one bite of it.

Other web reviews seem to be pretty positive, but I know I won't be buying it again.

Dave has his say:

Smart Ones Thai Style Chicken and Rice Noodles is an interestingly-flavored example of cheapo Thai taste. The peanut/tomato/sweet-and-sour flavor of the sauce does have a vinegary tang to it, so it's really not something Lynnafred would have liked.

As for the meal itself: The rice noodles are tender and somewhat sticky, loosened with a mildly spicy peanut sauce that has shades of tomato, sweet, and sour elements. The flavor of the carrots in the dish is enhanced with the addition of concentrated carrot juice; unfortunately this had the effect of giving the sauce a kind of tomato soup taste.

The chicken was well seasoned and flavorful, and there was a fairly generous portion of large, firm chunks. The ingredients said "roasted chicken tenderloin" and I have no reason to doubt it.

Overall, the meal wasn't all that bad, and was a nice change from some of the more run-of-the-mill noodly frozen meals. Props to Heinz for a tasty faux-Thai lunch, even though the sour aspect might turn some people away.

Healthy Frozen Meals: Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers - Sweet & Spicy Orange Zest Chicken

When I picked this up at the supermarket the other day, I thought it would be pretty good. I love getting Orange Chicken at those Chinese fast food places in the mall, so I was thinking of something like that, but, well...healthy, I guess.

I was terribly, terribly wrong.

I chucked it in the microwave for the five minutes the package called for and as it steamed itself, I went and did other things that needed to be done. When I passed through the kitchen, I noticed the faint smell of mint, and while I thought that it was kind of odd, didn't pay too much attention to it.

When the microwave beeped after my five minutes had passed, I pulled the plastic wrap off of the top and was hit in the face with the strong smell of mint.

I flipped the package over and re-read it. Odd. Mint wasn't anywhere on the ingredient list, and if it had been I wouldn't have gotten it. (Mint in food always gives me heartburn.)

But I decided that it was probably just my imagination, because if there's no mint in the ingredients, there couldn't possibly be any mint in the actual product. So I dumped the contents of the steam tray into the sauce, stirred it up, and took a giant bite of rice and veggies.

And all I could taste was mint. There was no spicy, no sweet, no orange goodness. Nothing but mint.

The only thing that didn't taste like mint was the chunks of chicken, which were the same as the other chicken bits I had gotten in the last Healthy Choice meal: beefed up with soy protein, a bit chewy, and speckled with fake grill marks. But that was the best part of the whole ordeal.

The veggies in this one were all overdone. The peas were overcooked to the point of mushiness, while their strings were too tough to chew. The finely cubed carrots and bell peppers were also overdone to mush, while the rice managed to come out just a little on the underdone side. (Not that it mattered much, because the whole thing was inedible.)

I got through a few bites before having to get rid of it. It was seriously that bad.

Dave adds:

I thought Lynnafred was kidding me when she called me up and told me about the heavily minted flavor in this meal, but I got a taste later and she wasn't kidding. Tasted like it was made with toothpaste. Nasty. I wonder if there was some kind of mistake made on the manufacturing line...no other food blooger has noted this flavor in any other online review.

Healthy Frozen Meals: Healthy Choice Cafe Steamers - General Tso's Spicy Chicken

General Tso stood on a hill looking over the city of Shaoxing. Smoke rose from numerous fires behind the city walls, and his triumphant troops were bringing loads of looted treasure and supplies back to their lines. Soon, one of his lieutenants approached with a line of prisoners. The General eyed them coldly. It had been a long campaign, and these soldiers had cost the lives of many of his best men. He turned to the first of the prisoners and said, "I will spare your lives...if you cook me a chicken."

It's been a hundred and fifty years since that day. I wonder what General Tso would have thought of this Healthy Choice chicken meal bearing his name.

I guess I'll never know, but I'm not sure if he'd be pleased with it.

There were three little pieces of chicken inside the steam tray - about a third of a chicken tenderloin. It tasted slightly artificial, like it had been beefed up with something. Sure enough, there's hydrolyzed soy protein, flavoring added, and tenderizers added to it. It's not too bad, just a bit chewier than I expect my chicken to be.

The veggies in this one seem to be the same as last time: scallions (which were more or less nonexistant), and a giant helping of cubed carrot and red bell pepper. The scallions that were present in the meal were a bit tough, but the carrots and bell peppers were done so that they were still just a bit crunchy. The rice was done to perfection as well; not chewy, not crunchy, but damn there was a lot of it.

And the sauce was pretty good too. It had a well-rounded flavor that included soy, ginger, hot pepper, garlic, black pepper, and sake if you concentrate really hard. The hot pepper and ginger gave the sauce a nice mid- to tip-of-the-tongue heat without making it too spicy.

Overall, it was something that I'd get again if it was on sale, but its regular price ($3.59) is just too expensive for me to justify paying for what's really just carrots and rice in a bowl.

Healthy Frozen Meals: Healthy Choice Sweet Asian Potstickers

For a while (and even now, when I think about it) Dave's been buying and trying frozen dinners and writing about them here. Not too long ago, someone left a comment about trying and writing up frozen meals by Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, and other "healthy" frozen meals. I thought that was a great idea, and took the project to do myself. (I'll leave the nasty and bizarre stuff to Dave.)

So every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I'm going to try (and write about) a "healthy" frozen dinner.

And today I'm going to write about Healthy Choice's Sweet Asian Potstickers.

(I'm using the microwave instructions on this one because it's easier and I'm going to assume people are eating these at work.)

The package told me to cut slits in the plastic film and cook it for four minutes. After that, I had to the the film off partially, flip the potstickers over, and cook for an additional two.

The meal had three average sized potstickers on one side of the tray, and a small scoop of rice and mixed veggies on the other. Everything was sitting in a shallow pool of sweet-smelling sauce.

The wrappers on the potstickers were tough and leathery, but I kind of expected that, as dumplings are kind of hard to microwave without them getting rubbery. The insides of them, though, were awesome. A pleasingly spicy mix of cellophane noodles, cabbage, and baked tofu were a perfect compliment to the sweet sauce that they were sitting in. The spices in the potstickers wasn't overpowering, or too weak; it was perfectly seasoned.

The rice and veggies were equally as nice, but a bit on the bland side. The rice was perfectly done, medium-grain rice; it was neither tough or chewy, while the veggies (carrots and red bell pepper) were still firm without being underdone. The carrots even had a bit of that perfectly done carroty 'crunch' to them. There were also supposed to be water chestnts, but there were none in my tray, sadly. There ws also a scant amount of scallions, which were tough and grassy, but they still added a little bit of onionesue flavor.

Overall, the Sweet Asian Potstickers were pretty good. I might even consider getting them again if I see Healthy Choice meals on sale here.
