New England Clam Chowder Update Coming

I'm working on updating the comprehensive guide to canned clam chowder, which was first published in June 2011. There have been a few minor updates over the past couple of years, but since I first posted it, Campbell's has discontinued some of their products and introduced others, and there has been at least one major recipe and/or label change. Look for a heavily revised guide to come out soon.

In the meantime, if there are any canned (or plastic-pouched) New England-style clam chowders you think I should try, let me know about it in the comments here or through the Contact Me form and I'll do my best to find them. Remember that I have to have some way to get them (online ordering or from a store close to the Western Massachusetts / Northern Connecticut area.) Also please remember that I do not accept manufacturer's samples or freebies.

  1. Are you re-reviewing New England Country Soup's clam chowder? Asking because I tried it at your recommendation and don't know if I got a bad pouch or what; but it was sour and rather "off" tasting in addition to being egregiously gray like gruel. Purchased at Stop&Shop in Spfld so rather local to where you are at.

  2. I am looking forward to your updated review of the various New England clam chowders. Campbell's Chunky New England Clam Chowder used to be my favorite. However they changed the recipe a couple of years ago and I think it tastes like sh@t now. I've tried Progresso's and Kirkland Label Campbell's Premium and didn't like their taste. Especially the Kirkland Label Campbell's Premium, it tasted moldy. I hope to see your review soon so that I can find a decent can of clam chowder!

  3. I am excited that you will be updating your clam chowder list! My current favorites are Campbell's Homestyle (regular not light) and Bar Harbor. Would really like your opinion on both of these. I live in CA and are unfamiliar with most of the brands on your list except for Campbell's and Progresso. It makes me sad.

  4. Making your own clam chowder is super easy and much better than canned. After a trip to Maine I came home and was able to make a perfect copy of the chowda I got at the Lobster Dock in Boothbay Harbor.
