Del Monte has a new fruit snack - little cups of spoonable fruit packed in juice. Lynnafred's tried a few of the available varieties: Mixed berry, pineapple, peaches, blueberries. For the most part, they've been decent or better.
Except for the blueberries.
I don't know how they managed to do it, but Del Monte has actually managed to make blueberries kind of nasty. They're packed in a very delicious grape juice (which is kind of wierd in itself, why not just use blueberry juice?) but then you take a spoonful of the berries up to your mouth and find out that they taste like they're made of wax.
These are pissed-off blueberries. They've been working out in the Blueberry Gym, becoming tough and mean. They don't like being chewed, and they resist it. They look like blueberries, and they smell like blueberries, and they have blueberry skins and a gut full of blueberry seeds, but they act like some badass bastard blueberry that hates your mouth.
Try them at your own risk - you've been warned.
Thanks for the warning....
ReplyDeleteLeave it to Del Monte to screw this up.
Thanks for the warning... LOL I like Solo Foods Blueberry Filling, it's as good as it gets.
ReplyDeleteThey've probably been frozen at some point. We grow lots of blueberries here in Michigan and I pack some up in the freezer every year. I find that after they've been frozen, while they're still yummy, their skins are a tad tougher than fresh ones.
ReplyDeleteI've tasted the Del Monte blueberry+blackberry from Costco as well as the grapefruit and BOTH do not taste anything like real fruit. I'm thinking its the preservatives. That or its GMO food. The flavor is TOTALLY DISGUSTING.
ReplyDeleteI am sad for any kids raised on this type of pre-processed food; they will surely learn to hate natural foods before they ever know what a real raw fruit tastes like.
Wow! I just recently saw this product in the produce section so i tried one and really liked it. I bought like 20 cups when they went on sale and snack on them all the time, i love them.
ReplyDeleteI just finished eating a cup of the blueberry + blackberry and I loved it. As a matter of fact, we are freezing one right now to see how they are when thawed back out. If it works out well, we will buy the cases of 8 whenever Costco has them on sale. We got a case of 8 today for $1.96. I am not saying they are better than fresh fruit but we certainly thought they tasted fine.
ReplyDeleteOMG. I love the blueberry cups. WHen they are on said, I buy all of them. Then I go to the same store in different locations and clean them out to. At one time, I had about 50 in my refrigerator. Needless to say, they were gone in a week. I wish I can buy them directly from the company. They are even better when you mix them with blueberry yogurt. Put them all in a bowl, after drinking the juice of course, and you have a great snack. I am on the hunt for them now.
