As a follow-up to yesterday's post about Utz Onion & Garlic chips, here's a review of the other Utz flavored chips I tried out: Utz Red Hot.
This is another "sweet" chip; flavor components include onion powder, paprika, sugar, and spices. At first bite, they're quite similar to "barbecue" flavor, but without any of the tomatoish tastes that BBQ chips often have.
And then, right after the first bite comes the spicy heat.
Utz is not kidding around with the big flaming letters that say RED HOT and the fire graphics on the bag. These are the most seriously hot chips I have ever had, and that includes most of the lame-ass "jalapeno" chips put out by national brands. Utz chips blaze. They caught my mouth on fire and made my lips burn for at least ten minutes after I was done eating them.
Although I wish they would tone down a little on the sugar, I can wholeheartedly recommend these fiery little bastards to anyone with a taste for hot and spicy food. You will not be disappointed, I promise you.
.
I wished they had a better texture. My review is here: http://snackreligious.blogspot.com/2009/01/pennsylvania-chip-face-off.html
ReplyDeleteThat's a great post, Jennette. I like the fire in the Utz chips. Now I need to track down some other brands to compare them to.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Yes, the world of "Red Hot" chips was new to me.
ReplyDeleteLove your blog!
My husband and my dog are both crazy for these chips. Did you give any to Zim?
ReplyDeleteUncle Ray's Hot are good, too.
Zim likes pepperoni and some hot Italian sausages, but he wouldn't take any Utz Red Hots from me. (He's ok with most other flavors, though. Guess he's just not a chilehead.)
ReplyDeleteI've never seen Uncle Ray's Hot around me, but I seem to remember some other Uncle Ray's products (just can't recall where.)
Hi Dave, love your blog. This post reminded me of a hot chip I used to enjoy when I was living in Montana, the brand was Tim's Cascade. thick-cut, kettle-cooked, jalapeno ,etc., but these were the real thing, even hotter than Utz if I'm remember correctly. I don't think they sell them in New England, but these babies are good enough to track down.
ReplyDeleteUtz....
ReplyDeleteImmortalized by a quick mention in The Blair Witch Project.
A true cult snack food brand.
I must find these chips. There isn't a big Utz market down here in Savannah. I may have to "amazon.com" them to order lol.
ReplyDeleteNice review there Dave! I felt that these chips were one of Utz's rare stand out products that I would actually want to buy more than once, and at a good price. I referenced your review in my own post on these chips on my blog:
