Not too long ago, a rep from ConAgra's Healthy Choice sent Dave an email asking us if we'd want to sample a couple of the new Healthy Choice flavors that have just been introduced. Dave agreed, and a few days later two of the new meals arrived on our doorstep: the Roasted Red Pepper Marinara I'm reviewing today, and Lemon Garlic Chicken and Shrimp, which I'll be reviewing on Monday.
Healthy Choice Roasted Red Pepper Marinara is a pasta dish with a really terrific sauce. The pasta is made of nine different whole grains (oats, barley, wheat, rye, amaranth, quinoa, millet, sorghum and teff) and was cavatelli rather than the more common and generic rotini or ziti. It had a really decent flavor, but I found the texture was a little odd - chewy and slightly gummy compared to the semolina flour pasta I'm used to. Other than that, it was very good. But it's definitely the suace that made the meal. A rich, robust tomato marinara redolent with roasted pepper flavor bathed the pasta. And topping it all was a generous sprinkling of cheese that melted nicely as the pasta cooked in the microwave.
The deliciousness of the roasted red pepper marinara and the outstanding flavor of the pasta were all I needed to overlook the unfamiliar texture of the pasta I wouldn't hesitate to buy this entree again.
